Letters of Recommendation

I'm almost always happy to help students and alumni with letters of recommendation / support. The only exception to this is if I don't think I'm the right person to write them.

Here's what I need from you if you want me to write you a letter:

  • Two weeks notice (or as much notice as possible)
  • Job listing / position announcement (or info on scholarship / fellowship opportunity, etc.)
  • Your current resume / curriculum vitae
  • A note describing why you are interested in this opportunity in particular (not just generally) and why you think you're a good fit
  • Complete contact info for the person to whom I should send the letter
    • Salutation (Dr., Mr., Mrs., or Ms.?)
    • Name
    • Title
    • Name of organization
    • Mailing address
    • Phone number (if possible)
    • Fax number (if possible)
    • E-mail (if possible)

If you're just using my name as a reference, I don't need all of this stuff. However, send me at least the job listing, your resume, and a note so that I sound halfway intelligent when someone calls me on the phone! In other words, help me help you...
